Captain James Hunt has never been
satisfied with market tackle, or less than
superlative equipment and that is why he fishes from
a 39 foot Custom built Topaz Royale and fishes his
own custom designed lures and tackle.
Jim is a native of Long Island and no
stranger to the challenges of fishing the big waters
of the Atlantic Ocean and the Canyons. From the
early age of 19 he developed a deep respect and
intimate knowledge of fishing. He began his career
surf fishing the waters off Montauk Point and Long
Island until he was able to purchase his 1st skiff.
Jim spent many years trailering that boat back and
forth to fish the waters off Moriches, Shinnecock,
Montauk, Block Island Sound, Plum Gut, The Race and
Fishers Island Sound. During that time he
experimented with different types of tackle and
fishing equipment, recording his success rates while
fishing for fluke, sea bass, blue fish, porgies and
cod. In 1975 he moved to test deeper waters with his
1st twin screw 30 foot Chris craft Sport Fisherman
and began fishing with innovative tackle of his own
design. Within a few years he had purchased a 40 ft
Pacemaker and worked the waters of the Canyons,
constantly testing, developing, and transforming his
lures until he was hauling in an abundance of Blue
Marlin, White Marlin, Big Eye Tuna, Albacore Tuna,
and Yellow Fin Tuna. Soon, after vacationing with
his good friend and colleague Don Butler, they
serendipitously ran across a 37 foot Scopinich
which they promptly bought and named “The Magician”.
Thus began a long time career of sport fishing that
targets Giant Tuna, and Big Eye Tuna in the Canyons.
During his 30 plus years on the water
Jim Hunt has developed much sought after innovative
and unique lures and tackle. He specializes in the
latest navigation and fishing finding electronics
and is renowned for running a safe and superlative
fishing charter. Jim will steer you safely into
